Paris Saint-Germain Football Club, commonly referred to as PSG or simply Paris, is a professional football club based in Paris, France. The club was founded on August 12th, 1970 through the merger of two existing clubs - Paris FC and Stade Saint-Germain (source). The aim behind its creation was to provide the city of Paris with a top-level football team that could compete with other French powerhouses.
Formation and Initial Struggles
During its inception, Guy Crescent and Pierre-Étienne Guyot were key figures involved in the establishment of the new club. They combined their forces with fashion designer Daniel Hechter, who would later become president of the team from 1973 to 1978 (source).
PSG had some struggles during their early days as they attempted to find their footing within French football. In fact, due to administrative issues regarding league registration in their first season (1970–71), they were only able to participate in competitions outside the official leagues (source).
In 1971–72 season, PSG participated in Division 2 where they achieved promotion in just one year by winning both Group B championship title and then defeating Valenciennes for an overall victory which earned them entry into Ligue 1 (source).
Early Successes and Notable Players
Despite their relatively quick rise, PSG found success in 1982 by winning its first major trophy - the French Cup, led by goalkeeper Dominique Baratelli and striker Mustapha Dahleb (source). This victory was a clear indication that the team was on its way to becoming an integral part of French football.
