FC Nantes emerged on the French football scene in 1943, amidst World War II. This was a period when France's established sports organizations were being restructured due to war exigencies. In an initiative led by Marcel Saupin, the president of US Mellinet et Étoile, and hardware store owner Georges Dufour, five local clubs decided to merge their resources to form a single unified team - Football Club de Nantes.
The early years were challenging as resources were scarce and competition tight. Initially playing in regional leagues, it wasn't until 1963 that they earned promotion to Ligue 1 under manager José Arribas. His philosophy of attacking play would come to define the club’s style for decades henceforth.
Notable players from this era include Philippe Gondet, who held the record for most goals scored in a single Ligue 1 season (36), and Robert Budzynski who later became General Manager.
